You know how sometimes someone you know will claim something is the *best* restaurant or food and you know it’s probably not?
At my previous job, I worked with two women who would bicker all of the time. They would turn staff meetings into Dwight Schrute vs. Dwight Schrute pissing contests.
Even though I’ve attended culinary school, worked in restaurants, and dedicated most of my life to trying and writing about food, they acted completed disinterested and dismissive about anything I said about cooking or dining.
One in particular would lecture me on how I could prepare very simple dishes.
I started to play it off and pretend I was actually really bad at cooking.
For those of us who prefer not to go inside restaurants during the pandemic, drive-thrus are perfect.
Heck, I’ll take a carry out window and just shiver outside for a bit.
It feels unsettling to call in an order and then go inside to pick it up while people dine and socialize, open-faced.
I can’t blame restaurants. The owners and employees are making impossible choices to survive.
If you have a drive-thru, I’m intrigued. I’ll be there.
Most of the fast food restaurants in the city have drive-thrus. But, these two local restaurants in the Twin Cities offer foods you might not typically think of as “fast food” through their drive-thrus.
I’ve been getting over that flu/cold thing that’s been going around the Twin Cities this winter. At least it’s given me time to catch up on TV shows and movies.
Now, The Good Place series finale is how you close out a show.
Back when my mom passed away, a friend lent me his DVD set of Six Feet Under, an HBO series that chronicles a family of undertakers. Watching it start to finish helped him come to peace with death and he hoped I’d feel the same. Six Feet Under remains one of my favorite series ever, but The Good Place got me closer to where Six Feet could not.
I also watched Booksmart which is a movie streaming on Hulu. It’s painfully relatable if you were also a nerd like me coming to terms with spending your grade school (and college) years like Amy. Now we’re all Lisa Kudrows and Jason Sudeikis’s.
Finally, I curiously watched Midsommar streaming on Amazon. I had already spoiled this movie for myself so I kept my finger on the fast-forward. It’s completely upsetting and creepy, but also beautifully filmed and compelling.
Saturday morning Trung Nam runs are becoming my new thing.
Trung Nam is a Vietnamese and French bakery located along University Avenue in the Frogtown neighborhood of Saint Paul. The owners have been serving french bread and croissants since 1989.
Although I remembered Heavy Table visiting Trung Nam in one of their Green Line Checklist chapters, what really pushed me to visit for the first time was learning they also serve banh mi sandwiches in the morning. Not only can you buy almost any flavor of croissant, but also a pork banh mi, too, all starting at 8 o’clock in the morning.
