Mid-Summer Update: Close To Home

Two words. The Bear.

Anyone who has worked in a restaurant probably feels like this show (now streaming on Hulu) hits too close to home.

I haven’t worked as a line chef, but I’ve worked front of the house in an Italian deli, staged at an upscale restaurant, and dabbled in a couple of bakery/cafes. Enough that I need to take frequent breaks as I work my way through this show.

The owner-family drama, the crappy coworkers (as well as the passionate, dedicated coworkers), hot pans, heavy lifting, spitting ticket machine, cost control concerns. . .

If you still holler “BEHIND” when you squeeze by people in the grocery store, this show is for you.

We re-joined Costo this month!

Spring Thoughts: Baby Birthday Parties, 2000’s Fashion, Chipotle Quesadilla Rant

I want to write, but I’m not sure what to share here lately.

Having been pregnant or a new parent during the pandemic, we haven’t traveled. And now that we have a toddler, we haven’t gone out to eat often. With the COVID surges and such, we mostly ordered take-out. We’re slowly venturing out more often. It feels good.

I’ve thought about writing more chapters of my book. A lot of the stories don’t seem right to share here, but gosh darn it, they’re pretty amusing.

I don’t think I’m destined to become the mom blogger I’ve always loathed. Mostly because I feel very strongly about parents blasting photos of their children all over the internet their permission – sure, a five year old can verbally “consent,” but is it actually informed? I think not.

Work Snacks and Corporate Cafeterias

It feels like a million years ago since I commuted to downtown Minneapolis every day for work.

In a prior job, we operated a service center so we rarely attended meetings or had team bonding events. We were so eager to catch our buses after work that we never had happy hours, either.

Our department launched an effort right before the pandemic banning anyone to work from home. For any reason. Even if you had a medical appointment in the middle of the day – you still had to come back to the office.  Many buses didn’t run mid-day and parking ramps jacked up prices after their early-bird specials. Once I paid $35 to park for the last few hours.

Birthday post

I’ve been lying about my age for years.

Why? Because it’s funny and I like it. Also, I’m Asian, so I can get away with it.

I always request my birthday off from work. The tradition started at my first job where no one came in on their birthday. This year I enjoyed a relaxing morning with baby, got a massage, and leisurely wandered through a Target ( a luxury, now!).

Fast Food Breakfast, Samarkand & Chow Mein

This summer my employer gradually return to work full-time. When my start time was later, I often looked for breakfast on the way home from daycare.

There aren’t many places along the way, so sometimes it was a gas station breakfast sandwich and floppy hashbrown patty (Holiday’s was pretty good!).

Other times it was Hardee’s on Hamline. They open at 6 a.m. and their food is better than most gas stations.

The parking lot is just so optimistically . . .big. Huge, really. Sometimes they have coffee, sometimes they don’t. I never seem to have a coupon at the right time.
