2019: The Favorites

“Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same,” The Fray once sang. I would also add that sometimes the best thing and my favorite thing aren’t the same.

In my last post I wrote about some 2019 bests. Here are my favorites:

Our Rotation Of Twin Cities Favorites:

  • Stewart’s: Jake always orders the patty melt. If they ever remove this from the menu I don’t know if he will be ok. To their credit, it is the best patty melt I’ve ever had. I order the falafel salad with a side of tahini. The salad greens are perfectly dressed and the falafel balls are flavorful and crisp. Our other go-to’s include the Korean fries and buffalo-style brussels spouts. The old fashioneds are also perfect.
  • Quang: Jake loves the pho with sliced beef and chicken pad thai. I always order the #502. The cream cheese wontons are our favorite version, most exquisitely enjoyed inside the restaurant, fresh from the fryer. The homemade sparkling limeade is another one of my favorites.
  • El Burrito Mercado: We visit the salsa bar in the deli frequently, often bringing home several types at a time. Our favorites include the chili de arbol salsa and one they used to call the drunken salsa – it’s the hottest. I also bring home a pack of jalapeno & cheese tamales. If we dine here, we like sitting at the bar inside the restaurant.
  • Himalayan: My death meal would probably the Creamy Kathmandu Curry (extra hot) with naan and raita from Himalayan. I could eat this three days a week and never get tired of it.

Favorite Food Experiences:

Sitting at the bar on a nice summer’s eve at Italian Eatery in Minneapolis.

Shooting the breeze with Jake over chips and salsa and margaritas at Chili’s.

French fries and martinis at The Lexington in St. Paul, MN.

Ordering bread service for one at In Bloom.

Pulling over to watch the Vikings game at a small bar in Beaver Bay, MN and eating cheesy bread.

Some of my favorite meals:

  • Nachos and chocoflan from El Taco Riendo in NE Minneapolis. I was actually kind of mortally offended when a local food publication didn’t include El Taco Riendo in it’s NE MPLS round-up. It’s quick-service style like a Chipotle, except the food tastes way better?
  • Tempeh curry bowl from Tillie’s FarmhouseThis is a meal I like to order as take-out on Fridays after a long week of work. It’s warm and comforting. There’s lots of unexpected things in here like crispy kale and pickled cabbage. They somehow manage to make tempeh taste. . . good.
  • Tofu Banh Mi from iPho.
  • Whatever vegetable curry Krishna’s Delight is serving at the NE Minneapolis or Midtown farmers markets.
  • And of course, the MN State Fair: Each year we look forward to eating Demetri’s gyros, Mouth Trap cheese curds and MN Wine Country slushies.
