A Post About One Of My Favorite Restaurants: On’s Kitchen, St. Paul

I’ve been ordering take-out from On’s Kitchen nearly once a week.

For years, we primarily visited Bangkok Thai Deli since back when the location operated out of the little grocery store with the This is still a place we still love.

It’s just that On’s is closer.

Once we tried both Bangkok Thai Deli and On’s, we’ve never branched out to other Thai restaurants in the Twin Cities. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t branch out too. We just found that when we branched out we missed these two places.

Bangkok Thai Deli and On’s have a special connection; The woman who owns On’s used to work at her sister’s restaurant Bangkok Thai Deli before opening On’s, as this Star Tribune article explains.

Here’s what we like about On’s that keeps us returning:

  • The prices are affordable.
  • Spicy is spicy.
  • The flavors are vibrant, intense and complex.
  • The dishes are less sweet.
  • The menu offers foods you might not find on many Thai restaurant menus around the cities.

On week nights, I like to order take-out from On’s. There is no delivery or DoorDash type of services. But, you can call in your order and pick it up. Orders are typically ready in about 15 minutes. There’s a little (and very tight) parking lot in the back. On’s packages to-go meals with care and accuracy.

My favorite dish, possibly in all of the Twin Cities, is On’s red curry. For only $10, On’s serves a sizable serving of coconut curry that includes your choice of chicken, beef, pork, mock duck (seafood costs an extra $2-3). The curry is loaded with vegetables including Thai eggplant, peppers, and bamboo shoots in addition to whatever protein you order. It’s so generous.

One order of curry provides us at least four meals. Bangkok Thai Deli’s red curry is just a tad less sweet, but I don’t mind a little sweetness.

Two other dishes we always order are the Thai beef salad and Pad Thai. On’s and Bangkok’s beef salad are equally good. On’s Pad Thai is a little saucier than Bangkok’s, but I’ll be darned if I’ve found better versions.

I know this isn’t the most exciting order but it’s our favorite and it’s always good.

Feel free to share your thoughts below. At what restaurants are you a regular and why do you keep going back?

The number of people who’ve told me I need to go to On’s has probably reached triple digits. Somehow, it keeps getting missed.

We just went there again this weekend! I’ve been eating leftover soup and curry for days. If you haven’t Bangkok Thai Deli or On’s I would definitely visit one. Their food just stands out.
