On Saturday, my friends and I spent the afternoon at the inaugural Twin Cities Native American Arts Festival.
Last year, my friend used to worked with Little Earth’s youth program and encouraged me to volunteer as a mentor during that fall. I caught my first glimpse of fry bread at a Little Earth community gathering but was too bashful to try it. Once, to my surprise, a Little Earth staff member shared with me this Ojibwe word for blueberry pie: Miin-aan baash kimini-sij-i-gan bitooyin sij-i-gan-i bukwayszhiiga
We bathed in the warm sun eating fry bread tacos and cheering on talent show acts including politically-informed 12 year olds performing hip hop, young adults praising the “fry bread booty,” and a man with the soul of Johnny Cash.

I am automatically drawn to fried foods and enjoyed the fry bread taco medium which was soft, fluffy, and sweet. I even bought an extra fry bread to savor at home. When I attempt to create my own fry bread tacos, I will make the bread a little less sweet and toppings more spicy. All in all, though, a pleasing knife and fork affair and vibrant afternoon.
From what I gathered from chatting with a vendor, we were served the same version of The Wolves Den taco, sold for $3.50 on Fridays. The Wolves Den is located in the Minneapolis American Indian Center at 1530 E. Franklin Ave. My friend, who introduced me to Afro Deli and Coffee, has praised their tacos all year.
